There are several contributing factors most common of which are hereditary, sleeping on our backs / mouth breathing, alcohol consumption, weight gain and ageing.   

Normally during sleep the muscles which control the tongue and soft palate hold your airway open.  If these muscles relax the airway becomes narrower, which causes snoring and breathing difficulties.
